Vagus Nerve Stimulation
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an FDA-approved medical treatment that uses gentle electrical pulses to stimulate the vagus nerve—a major communication pathway between the brain and vital organs like the heart, lungs, and digestive system.
- The vagus nerve is connected to areas of the brain that control mood.
- How it works:
A small device, known as a pulse generator, is surgically implanted in the chest. A thin wire (electrode) is connected to the left vagus nerve in the neck to deliver regular electrical stimulation.
- Used for depression: VNS is now an option for individuals with treatment-resistant depression—those who haven’t responded to standard treatments like therapy or antidepressants.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment used for depression. When medications are ineffective to treat depression, TMS is considered. This FDA-cleared, non-invasive procedure uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. Patients report that this treatment frequently improves depression.

Psychogenetic Testing
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes clinically important genetic variations that may affect your response to medications. The results of the test can provide your doctor with information about which medications may be more likely to work. It can also identify medications that may require dose adjustments or have an increased risk of side effects based on your genetic makeup. You can find more information about the GeneSight test at
