Vagus Nerve Stimulation

The vagus nerve is connected to areas of the brain that control mood.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an FDA-approved medical treatment that uses gentle electrical pulses to stimulate the vagus nerve—a major communication pathway between the brain and vital organs like the heart, lungs, and digestive system.

How It Works:

A small device, known as a pulse generator, is surgically implanted in the chest. A thin wire (electrode) is connected to the left vagus nerve in the neck to deliver regular electrical stimulation.

Used for Depression:

VNS is now an option for individuals with treatment-resistant depression—those who haven’t responded to standard treatments like therapy or antidepressants.
